Grigory Shtender, Evening
Grigory Shtender is a member of the Artists Union and the Architects Union of Russia. He is one of the founders of the Novgorod branch of the Artists Union. Shtender specializes in watercolors of architecture.
Architecture is one of the most strictly structured subjects you can choose for a painting, making it a particular challenge for watercolorists. However, instead of fighting against watercolors formless nature, he allows it spread more freely creating an interesting abstraction that is still quickly readable as a building. Evening has only a few visual brush strokes, being mostly composed of a series of washes that flow into one another. There is a faint shadow being cast from the building that cloaks the figures descending the staircase, giving the painting a sense of closure.
